Buildex,
Sustainable Development, and LEEDTM Green Building
certification credits.
Buildex, as a
member of the Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute (ESCSI) and the
commercial construction industry since 1951, has always believed in what
is now being called "sustainable development." Quite simply, our
product lasts a long time and improves the performance of concrete and
other products that it is used in.
In today's
"throw away" economy, a durable, energy saving product like
Buildex may not be trendy, but we are what we are. Any discussion of sustainability
and LEED certification must include life cycle cost analysis, and Buildex
encourages all building professionals to recognize its importance in our
society.
In 2004 Buildex and
other producer members of the ESCSI have developed the
publication Structural
Lightweight Aggregates' Holistic Contribution to Sustainable
Development (220 kb PDF)
It discusses
the commitment of Buildex and our industry to sustainable
development and details the contribution of Buildex toward LEED
Green Building certification credits in a variety of areas,
including
- Sustainable
Sites
- Water
Efficiencies
- Energy
& Atmosphere
- Materials
& Resources
- Indoor
Environmental Quality
- Innovation
& Design Process.
Beginning in
2008 Buildex and several other producers of expanded shale
lightweight aggregate have provided claims that their fine
aggregate, typically used to produce lightweight concrete block and
in other applications, qualifies as a LEED NC 4.1 & 4.2 Recycled
Content. Please contact the Buildex sales office directly by
telephone or email for more information concerning this.
